“Why Attendance Matters”
Every Day Matters at P.S. 185
Being in school every day helps students stay connected, build strong learning habits, and receive the academic and social-emotional support they need to succeed.
Even missing two days of school each month can have a lasting effect on a student’s learning. We understand that illnesses, emergencies, and other circumstances may sometimes prevent a child from attending. When challenges arise, please contact us so we can work together to support your family.
Please notify the school and provide the reason for your child’s absence.
When your child returns, send a written note from a parent, guardian, or medical provider explaining the absence. The note should be given to your child’s teacher and will be forwarded to the Main Office.
All absences must be explained in writing.
If Your Child Is Absent
When you know your child will be absent for several days, please contact the school as soon as possible. Include the reason for the absence and the date your child is expected to return.
For travel-related absences, please email a copy of the student’s return flight information to 20K185@schools.nyc.gov.
Extended Absences or Travel
Students who are absent from school may not participate in after-school programs, evening activities, performances, clubs, or other school events taking place that day.

Important to Know
An excused absence is still recorded as an absence on a student’s official attendance record. Absences may be excused for reasons such as illness, a medical need, a religious observance, or an emergency.
Families are required to provide the school with the reason for each absence. Please also make sure the contact information on your child’s Blue Card and NYC Schools Account is current so the school can reach you when necessary.
We Are Here to Help
-
If your child is experiencing frequent absences or lateness, a member of the P.S. 185 Attendance Team may contact you to discuss concerns and identify ways we can help.
Please reach out to the school when illness, transportation, family circumstances, or another challenge is making regular attendance difficult. Our goal is to work in partnership with families and help every student attend school consistently and successfully.
-
Students are responsible for completing missed assignments and classwork when they return to school.
Families in grades 1–5 should check Google Classroom for posted assignments and classroom updates. Kindergarten families should follow the homework information provided by their child’s teacher.
Please remember that completing work at home does not change an absence to a present day.
