Safety

Fire and shelter drills are held periodically throughout the school year to ensure that our students and staff are familiar with all safety procedures in case of an emergency. We also have lock down drills.

Emergency Drills

In the event of emergency conditions such as weather emergencies or school wide emergencies please visit the Department of Education website.

Inclement Weather

For the safety of all students and staff, all exterior school doors remain locked during the school day. Visitors must ring the doorbell and wait to be admitted by school staff. Please do not hold doors open for others or allow anyone to enter behind you without checking in. All visitors are required to sign in at the main office and present valid identification upon arrival.

Health and Wellness

Free breakfast and lunch is available for all students. Meals are provided at no cost. If your child has food allergies, please advise your teacher and school nurse immediately and indicate it on the blue card. .

School Meals

The New York State Department of Education and the Board of Health requires that documentation be secured proving that all children who come to school are fully immunized. We are required to exclude children that are not immunized and do not have documentation froma physician indicating the reason.

Immunization

Emergency blue cards are sent home with students during the first week of school. Parents must keep the school informed of any changes to the information on the card. When a child becomes ill or injured, it is very important that the school have the current address and phone numbers in order to contact that parent or guardian.

If your child becomes sick…

Fever 100°C or higher, ear ache, infected skin patches, sore throat, swollen glands, head lice, unusual spots or rashes, persistent cough, upset stomach, “pink eye” (conjunctivitis), vomiting or diarrhea

By keeping your child home, you are not only helping them get well faster, you are also preventing the illness from spreading to other members of the class. Let the school know as soon as possible that your child is ill. When your child returns to school, give them a note for the teacher/nurse explaining the absence.

If your child becomes sick in school the school will contact you immediately. It is your responsibility to come to school and pick up your child. If you are unavailable, the person listed on the emergency blue card will be contacted.

Communication and Devices

To support a focused and distraction-free learning environment, P.S. 185 follows the NYC Public Schools cell phone policy. Students who bring a cell phone or personal electronic device to school must keep it powered off and securely stored during the school day. Personal devices may only be used before or after school in accordance with school procedures and are not permitted during instructional time.

Cell Phones

Families may contact their child’s teacher through email or Remind. Teachers will respond as soon as they are able, but please remember that they are actively teaching throughout the school day and may not see messages right away. For urgent matters or emergencies, please contact the Main Office so staff can notify the teacher promptly.

Teacher Contact

P.S. 185 is committed to helping students become safe, responsible, and respectful digital citizens. We encourage families to explore the NYC Public Schools resources on internet safety and the responsible use of artificial intelligence to support learning both at school and at home.
